I was scared when I received the young plants as they were really small. Later on, they grew well but did not flower (which may be normal). We'll see next year.

Description

These large, single flowers of this Primula polyantha F1 'Starflame' are striking for their unique, fiery, attractive shades of colour combined in contrasting pairs. They bloom from February-March to May, in full sun or a bit later in partial shade. These abundantly flowering  biennials are easy to grow in moist, humus-rich soil.

The hybrid primroses of the 'Starflame' F1 Mix are biennial plants of the primrose family resulting from cross-breeding between the common primrose (Primula vulgaris) and the cowslip (Primula veris). This variety is an improvement of the 'Starfire' series, which has even more vibrant colours. The 'Starflame' primrose plants quickly form small compact clusters of 15 cm (5.9 in) in all directions. They develop rosettes of brilliant, bright green, ruffled and veined leaves. Between February and May, they produce bicoloured flowers, 5 to 6 cm (2 - 2.4 in) in diameter, combining two shades that always form a happy contrast: orange and yellow, pink and yellow, blue and white, or even purple and yellow. They are arranged in perfect clusters and borne on short hairy stalks surrounded by a collar of luxuriant foliage.

'Starflame' mixed primroses are versatile, reliable and really easy to grow.  They deserve a place in every garden and balcony. Colourful, lively, full of flowers and early, they herald the return of spring with a flourish. In borders or window boxes, these small plants are ideal companions for tulips, pansies, horned violets and forget-me-nots. They are perfect in borders and low beds under leafy canopies, in rockeries and lawns, among snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be eaten raw or cooked.

Properties:

They are the same as those of the cowslip or oxlip: the flowers are soothing and calming and can be used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the whole plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic and expectorant properties.

Note: Please be aware that our young plant plugs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, into containers, flowerpots, or directly into flowerbeds.

Planting and care

Primroses can be planted in pots and containers or directly into the ground in good, well-prepared, soil. If possible plant them as soon as you receive them, in September-October. If the intended location is not yet ready or if the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can let them grow on in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good, light and well-draining potting compost for flowering plants (such as geranium potting compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertilizer. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil. Water thoroughly at planting and during the following weeks, as the seedlings can quickly dry out. Be careful not to overwater! Make sure you use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water, even during winter, if there is no rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during periods of frost.

Flowering abundantly and fast-growing, biennial primroses are nutrient-demanding plants. As soon as they start growing again, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering season, apply a liquid fertilizer containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week when watering. Deadhead to encourage flowering. Once flowering is over, plants in pots can be replanted in the garden in semi-shade.
