Small naked young plants upon opening the box. No growth from them....disappointed.

Description

The Primula acaulis Rambo F1 'Lemon Cream' is a new winter garden primrose as it blooms from January onwards. Its very large 6 cm (2in) flowers, single, open and flat, are tinted with butter yellow and enhanced by an orange halo. They bloom on a cushion of dark green leaves. Strong and vigorous, this early variety is a reliable choice for borders, pathways, or balcony planters, in partial shade and in soil that retains moisture.

The Primula acaulis, also known as Primula vulgaris, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the primrose family, a wild species found in our meadows and woodlands. 'Lemon Cream' is a recent hybrid that stands out for its vigour and large flowers. It is a floriferous plant, which forms a beautiful clump of lush foliage in a few months, about 15 cm (6in) tall and 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10in) wide. It develops more or less evergreen rosettes of spatulate, wavy and veined leaves, ranging from medium green to dark green.

The Primula Rambo F1 'Lemon Cream' primrose is tough, not intimidated by climatic vagaries, and easy to grow. Queen of winter balconies and border edges, it is positioned to be visible from the house, as it is the first to bloom at a time when one may not always feel like going outside. This plant sets the stage for other primroses to come, followed by forget-me-nots, daffodils, Siberian squills, and Crocuses. Under the cover of bushes, in partial shade, they brighten up flowerbeds, rockeries, and short grass meadows, among snowdrops and violets.

Virtues: They are the same as those of the officinal primrose and the tall primrose: the flowers are soothing and calming, used in expectorant preparations. The leaves combat the formation of bruises, and the whole plant (especially the root) possesses analgesic, antispasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Planting and care

Primroses can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible upon receipt, in September-October or in March-April. If the intended location is not yet ready or the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them on as plug plants for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good potting soil for flowering plants (geranium-type potting soil) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful of excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week in the watering can. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once the flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in semi-shade.
