Description

Helianthus argophyllus ‘Gold and Silver’ is a surprising and elegant annual sunflower with captivating, silky, silver-hued foliage and large, bright yellow flowers with dark centres. This upright and bushy plant forms a luminous clump that draws the eye in summer borders, and its flowers are perfect for rustic bouquets. It is easy to sow and grow in the sun, in all types of well-drained soil. Use it in the ornamental garden as well as in the vegetable patch.

Helianthus argophyllus 'Gold and Silver' is a plant from the Asteraceae family. Nicknamed the "silverleaf sunflower" or "silver sunflower", the species is native to the coastal regions of Texas, USA, where it grows naturally in sandy soils near the coast. It has been introduced and naturalised in other regions, notably in Florida, North Carolina, as well as in parts of Africa, Australia, and Indonesia.
The life cycle of Helianthus argophyllus is strictly annual: the plant germinates, flowers, produces seeds, and dies within a single growing season.

The 'Gold and Silver' cultivar is an improved horticultural selection of the species. This variety is distinguished by its silver foliage and abundant flowering, offering increased ornamental interest compared to the wild species. The plant has an upright and branching habit, reaching a height of 1.5 m, or even more under optimal conditions. The plant's spread varies between 45 and 60 cm. Flowering occurs 12 to 14 weeks after sowing. The stems are robust, covered in fine hairs that give them a characteristic silvery hue. The leaves measure between 15 and 25 cm long and 10 to 20 cm wide; they have a downy texture due to a high density of hairs or trichomes. The foliage disappears with the arrival of the first frosts. The inflorescences, typical of the Asteraceae, are heads composed of 15 to 20 yellow ligulate florets surrounding a central disc of over 150 tiny fertile tubular florets. Each head measures approximately 10 cm in diameter. Flowering extends from July to October, attracting a variety of pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. The fruits are oval-shaped achenes (or caryopses), measuring between 4 and 6 mm long. Although technically edible, these seeds are primarily used for reproduction or for feeding birds. The root system is a taproot, promoting good anchorage and some tolerance to drought.

Helianthus argophyllus is used in breeding programmes for the cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Due to its drought tolerance and resistance to certain diseases, this wild species has been used to introduce beneficial genes into cultivated lines, thereby improving their resilience.

In the garden, the 'Gold and Silver' sunflower is a star of sunny summer borders. It brings light and height to floral compositions and integrates wonderfully into a natural or bohemian atmosphere. This superb variety forms a backdrop for a perennial border, can be placed at the edge of a vegetable patch, or in a cut flower garden. Pair it with the white Sunflower 'Italian White', deep red Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Rubenza’Argentinian Vervain (Verbena bonariensis) for its light violet flowers, and Green Amaranth 'Viridis' for its long, anise-green clusters.

An ecological asset: All summer long, the nectar-rich flowers of Sunflowers attract pollinating insects and butterflies to your garden. A great way to improve the ecosystem and promote the production of fruit and vegetables in your kitchen garden.
The oil-rich seeds are particularly appreciated by birds (Parrots, Tits, Doves, Goldfinches, Siskins, Nuthatches, Chaffinches…). After flowering, harvest them to feed the birds during winter scarcity.

Planting and care

Sow Sunflower 'Gold and Silver' from March to May in pots. Use good quality compost, sieved on the surface to ensure the seed bonds well with its substrate. Before sowing, lightly firm the compost using a small board. Place 2 seeds 10 cm apart in each pot. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost or vermiculite over them, press down gently and water thoroughly with a fine rose. Place your pots in the light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 20°C to 25°C. Lower the temperature at night to 17°C to create a beneficial alternation for germination.

Seed germination will take approximately 21 days. Keep the compost moist, but not waterlogged, during growth. 15 days before their final planting out, begin to acclimatise them gradually to a temperature of 15°C.

By late May or early June, the garden temperature will be warm enough to plant out your young plants. Choose a location with plenty of sun. Add a good spadeful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 45 cm apart.

In May, you can sow seeds directly in their final position. By staggering your sowings, you will extend the flowering period until autumn.

Protect your seedlings from attacks by snails and slugs, which are fond of these young plants. Sowing chives near your sunflowers can deter aphids that might be tempted to settle there.
