Average harvest, but like many other customer reviews of vegetable seeds, it seems that the seeds sold through your website do not germinate properly, requiring additional sowing. This is the first time I have encountered this problem so frequently after twenty years of gardening...

Description

The White-stemmed Swiss Chard is a biennial vegetable plant, 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) tall, grown for its dark green smooth leaves and its wide white stalks, which are consumed cooked. Relatively early and good heat tolerance. Spring sowing. Harvest in late summer, autumn.

Swiss Chard gets its name from a popular soup consumed in the Middle Ages, of which it was the main ingredient. It is also known by many other names: Chard, Swiss Chard with stalks.

Swiss Chard leaves are delicious in pies, soups, or cooked like spinach. The stalks can be prepared in a gratin with béchamel or steamed. Although low in calories and rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, Swiss Chard should be consumed in moderation by people suffering from arthritis and rheumatism, as it contains oxalates.

Harvest: Leaves and stalks should be harvested as needed, selecting the largest ones.

Storage: Can be stored for a few days in a cool place after harvesting.

Gardener's tip: Regular hoeing and weeding is recommended, and mulching is advised in case of drought.

Planting and care

Sowing

from March to June

In a previously amended soil (rich but without fresh manure) and prepared finely with a rake.

Directly in place, as transplanting sometimes causes premature seeding.

Either in a small hole with 3 seeds every 40 cm (16in) covered with a layer of fine soil. Then regular watering until germination. Keep the most beautiful plant at the stage of 3-4 leaves.

Or in a shallow furrow, in rows spaced 40 cm (16in) apart covered with a layer of fine soil. Then regular watering until germination. At the stage of 3-4 leaves, thin out to leave only one plant every 40 cm (16in).

Maintenance

Regular weeding and hoeing should be done.

Watering should be abundant and frequent.

Chard can, in certain climates, above -6°C (21.2°F), overwinter in the ground by taking care to generously mulch them.
