Description

The Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Snowflake' is a dwarf and variegated Japanese false cypress variety that owes its name to its young spring foliage, which is compact, gray-green, with variegated and speckled cream-white or even gray tips. Its bushy and upright habit is adorned with a fine and dense fern-like foliage, composed of pinnate branchlets, which become dark green in summer. This unusual variety shines in spring flower beds like a flowering plant, stands out as a standalone specimen, enlivens rockeries, and adapts well to container cultivation. Easy to grow in ordinary, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade.

Also called Japanese hinoki cypress and reaching a height of 50m (164 ft) in its natural environment. This small-sized variety, 'Snowflake', stands out with its spring foliage that appears speckled with snowflakes. It's upright conical habit grows slowly to form a clump of upright branches, resembling unruly fern fronds. After ten years of cultivation, it will reach a height of 1.20m (3 ft 11 in), with a diameter of 60cm (23.6 in). At maturity, this conifer will not exceed 1.80m (5 ft 11 in) in height and 90cm (35.4 in) in spread. Its irregular vegetation consists of numerous upright, slightly twisted, slender branches. Its tiny scale-like leaves are arranged flat on the branches, and are a beautiful dark green in summer, sometimes with gray or bluish tips.

The Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Snowflake' is ideal for container cultivation on a terrace, or in the ground in small gardens, thanks to its slow growth and moderate size. With its foliage adorned with bright spots, it competes with flowering shrubs and becomes a magnificent specimen when planted as a standalone. As it prefers slightly acidic soils, it pairs well with small camellias, rhododendrons, and azaleas. The true graphic qualities of dwarf conifers naturally assert themselves in the design of a contemporary garden, which prefers the aesthetics of shapes, silhouettes, and textures over blooms. This variety will also complement a collection of exotic plants in a garden that embraces the unusual. Conifers are plants with reassuring permanence, which, when used discerningly, provide long-lasting structure to a flower bed, mark pathways, border terraces, easily replacing the strong presence of trimmed boxwood. They can be associated with shrubs or ground cover plants such as aubrietas, ceraistes, as well as flowering shrubs. The key is to play with volumes and colors.

Tips:

Water regularly in summer and during prolonged drought periods, as this bush requires moist soil.

Planting and care

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Snowflake' is planted from September to November and from February to June in ordinary and moist soil, but especially well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic. Choose an open location to allow air circulation in its dense foliage. It thrives in a semi-shaded exposure or partial sun, sheltered from prevailing winds. Soak the roots well before planting. Add organic amendment at planting and water generously in the first few years. Apply a special conifer fertilizer every year in April and cultivate the soil in summer. It does not require pruning. While the tender shoots of young plants can be regularly pruned to form a hedge, care must be taken to never prune the old wood on mature specimens as no new growth will generate there. If you choose to cultivate it in a pot, protect the plants from severe cold in winter.
