Description

The Petunia 'Surfinia Giant Blue' is a vigorous variety, producing hundreds of large single funnel-shaped flowers in dark blue-violet colour until autumn. The plant has a unique habit, both compact and trailing, invariably blooming in a cascade, absolutely perfect in hanging baskets. This plant shows excellent resistance to bad weather and is highly heat tolerant. An easy-to-grow flower that requires little maintenance!

The Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial or frost-tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and are all native to the warm regions of South America. The Surfinia® Petunia is a sterile hybrid of petunia, quite recent, with a pendulous and weeping habit, rather than an upright one, which makes it a magnificent plant in hanging baskets. It was created in Japan and is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.

The blue-violet Surfinia petunia forms a vigorous dense and pendulous clump, with creeping and hairy stems cascading for 1 metre (3.3 feet) or more. The plant is in bloom from May-June to October, as long as it is regularly supplied with water and fertiliser. Its cup-shaped flowers are of a good size, about 5 cm (2 in) in diameter, and of a deep blue-violet colour, centred on an almost black throat. They are tightly packed together on dense foliage. The leaves, quite hairy, ovate and pointed, have entire edges and a dark green colour, vigorous and healthy. This variety shows an exceptional habit and requires very little maintenance, as its sterile flowers easily drop off on their own.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period of time. The results are impressive, as petunias rival geraniums in splendour and length of flowering, as evidenced by this Surfinia Giant Blue variety. Install it in large pots or hanging baskets, creating a perfect contrast with Surfinia Sky Blue, Deep Red, or Hot Pink petunia varieties. You can also plant it in borders, to punctuate grey-foliaged plants such as cerastiums, cinerarias, or artemisias. If you want to stand out, plant several plants to create an original ground cover at the base of grey-foliaged plants like Nepetas faassenii or annual poppies in pastel colors.

Note: Attention, our young plants in mini-pots are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in sheltered places (veranda, greenhouse, frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in pots. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in pots in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich but especially well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess humidity. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer temperatures. Very floriferous and with rapid growth, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for petunias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
