Description

The Petunia 'Cassandra F1' is one of the latest additions to this stunning series of hybrids called surfinias, much favoured by gardeners. It is a lovely selection with double flowers, in a mix of different colours ranging from pale pink to purple depending on the plants. With their attractive, compact, upright and trailing habit, and their unparalleled floriferousness, they work wonders in a romantic setting, in planters and hanging baskets.

Petunias belong to the Solanaceae family. They are closely related to e.g. ornamental tobacco, and their foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals, and they all originate from the warm regions of South America. The Surfinia® Petunia is a relatively recent sterile hybrid, with a trailing, weeping habit rather than an upright one, which makes it a magnificent plant for hanging baskets. It was created in Japan and is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.

The 'Cassandra' Petunia quickly forms a bushy, semi-trailing clump that is approximately 25-35 cm (9.8 - 13.8 in) tall and 30-40 cm (11.8 - 15.7 in) in diameter. The plant flowers from June to October, provided that faded blooms are regularly removed and regular fertilisation is provided. Its cup-shaped flowers are medium-sized, about 5 cm (2 in) wide, double, and tightly packed on dense foliage. The color palette includes pale pink, candy pink, deep pink, and rose-purple. The foliage, quite downy, has full edges and a dark green hue, and is vigorous and healthy. This variety tolerates heat quite well.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive, as petunias rival pelargoniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this 'Cassandra' double selection. Place them in large pots or hanging baskets, mixing up the colours: add a dark blue or white Surfinia Petunia for contrast. You can also plant your petunias in flowerbeds, to punctuate plants with gray foliage such as candytuft, coastal cineraria, or wormwood. If you want to stand out, plant your 'Cassandra' petunias in groups to create an original ground cover at the base of plants such as Faassen's catmint or annual poppies in pastel colors.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, frame) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. To plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a minor late frost). In the meantime pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant out in a sunny site sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich soil, but above all well-draining. Do not water them too much at the beginning of setting growth as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and rapid growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded blooms and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and extend flowering.
