Description

Petunia Mystery Sky is a variety in the line of Night Sky with starry flowers but a dark violet colour. This rather compact variety has large flowers with a fascinating colour. They seem to sparkle with white spots of varying size on a rich purple background with black and purple highlights. The flowering is abundant and prolonged, on a bushy and semi-trailing plant. This petunia is capable of transforming any terrace into a fantastic setting, on its own or planted with other varieties from the Sky series.

Petunia belongs to the solanaceae family; it is related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or frost-tender perennial plants are most often grown as annuals and all originate from the warm regions of South America.

Petunia Mystery Sky is part of a new series of hybrids that stands out from the rest. It forms a beautiful dense and semi-trailing clump, with long velvety stems rising up to 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14in) before cascading down to 60 cm (24in), or even more. The plant is in bloom from May-June to October, provided it is regularly watered and fed. Its large, cup-shaped flowers are about 7-8 cm (3in) in diameter, with a velvety texture and a deep violet colour with small white spots which appear more intense when there are significant temperature differences between day and night. These flowers bloom on dense foliage. The hairy, ovate and pointed, vigorous and healthy leaves are dark green and have entire edges. This variety requires very little maintenance: simply remove faded flowers regularly.

No other flowering annual plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival geraniums in splendour and length of flowering, as evidenced by this Mystery Sky variety, a true horticultural achievement in terms of colour. Plant it in large, white, grey or red designer pots, or hanging baskets, with white or dark red petunia varieties. You can also plant it in flower beds, to edge borders of plants with grey or white foliage such as Dusty Miller, Sea cineraria, or Wormwood. If you want it to stand out, plant several plants to create an original ground cover. Use the flowers to decorate a floral centrepiece, sprinkled with gold glitter, for example, to amaze your guests!

Note: Attention, plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14 °C for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Mystery Sky petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a light late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright location to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of their growth, as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer periods. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid petunia fertiliser once or twice a week during the growth period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend their flowering period.
