Description

Petunia Designer Rose Star is part of an innovative family of hybrids, a series of cultivars characterised by their flowers marked with unique patterns, drawing hearts around a 5-branched star on the edges of the petals. The plant forms a rounded clump adorned with remarkably contrasting, funnel-shaped flowers with a heart design in a very bright pink against a pure white background. The plants bloom until October. This original annual brings brilliance to flower beds, pots and hanging baskets. It is easy to grow in sunny, fertile, light, and moist soil.

Hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. Petunia 'Designer Rose Star' belongs to the solanaceae family, it is closely related to ornamental tobacco, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. This variety quickly forms a round and dense, neat clump, about 35 cm (14in) high and 35-45 cm (14-18in) in diameter. The plant flowers from May to October, provided it is well-watered and regularly fed. Its medium-sized, cup-shaped flowers are two-toned, fuchsia pink and pure white and tightly packed together on vigorous and healthy, dense foliage. The hairy, dark green leaves have entire edges.

No other annual flowering plant has been subjected to such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival geraniums in splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this variety 'Designer Rose Star'. plant it in large pots or hanging baskets for a stunning result. It will create a perfect contrast with the black-flowered petunia Black Ray, or a very elegant ensemble with a white or red petunia. You can also plant it in a bed, to punctuate borders of plants with grey foliage such as ceraistes, cineraria maritima, or artemisias. If you want it to stand out, place several plants to create an original ground cover at the base of plants with grey foliage such as faassen's catmint or annual poppies.

Note: Attention, our plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed, they will tolerate a little late frost. In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Petunias will flower from June to October. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded location, sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as you go to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
