Description

The Petunia 'Chocolina' is a brand new variety of delightful and unusual Mini-Petunia. The thousands of small flowers are as brown and velvety as cocoa. It is an annual plant with a robust and very floriferous habit, possessing a dense, bushy and slightly trailing form that works wonders in baskets and hanging planters, despite wind and rain. Even its small green and pointed leaves remain impeccable throughout the season. Its cultivation is within reach of everyone, regardless of the climate, by planting it in a light and fertile soil that is kept moist.

Petunias, Supertunias and Calibrachoa, sometimes called Million Bells, are tender perennial plants often grown as annuals. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes) and are probably descended from an Argentine species called Petunia integrifolia. The 'Chocolina' variety quickly forms a dense and wider than tall mound, 25 to 30 cm (9.8 - 11.8 in) in height and 40 cm (15.7 in) in diameter. Its flexible stems are densely covered with small, lanceolate, evergreen, velvety and slightly sticky leaves, of medium green colour. The tireless flowering takes place from June until the first frost. Many small funnel-shaped flowers are born in the axils of the leaves; they are 3 to 4 cm (1.2 - 1.6 in) wide, remarkably coloured in warm chocolate brown, with a black and yellow throat. Unlike petunias, mini-petunias and Calibrachoa do not need to be pruned during the season.

The 'Chocolina' Petunia is ideal in hanging baskets, pots or containers, but its tolerance to bad weather as well as its vigour also allow it to be used in the ground, where it forms borders full of whimsy and spots of intense colour in flowerbeds. It can be planted alone or accompanied by 2 or 3 other varieties with complementary colours (blue, soft pink, orange, white). Petunias are also good conservatory plants. Their combination with Verbenas, Surfinias, double Bacopas and Nemesias is remarkable. The choice is vast and leaves room for imagination and the tastes of every gardener, even the inexperienced ones.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (conservatory, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before being placed outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (supertunia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Their habit will be more ramified if you pinch the tips of the young shoots during vegetative growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich but especially well-draining soil. Do not overwater them at the beginning of vegetative growth as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They will need regular and frequent watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are also very hungry. We recommend feeding them with a liquid petunia fertilizer once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
