Description
Nemesia Sunsatia Cherry On Ice, also known poetically Mirror of the Elves, is a remarkable annual plant capable of flowering from the end of winter up until autumn. Clusters of bicoloured corollas, red and white with a yellow heart, bloom en masse, covering its dense and semi-trailing vegetation, for a sensational effect in hanging baskets and containers. This well-branched plant shows good resistance to bad weather and can tolerate light frosts. It should be placed in a gently sunny position, in fertile and well-drained soil.
Nemesia strumosa, also known as African nemesia, is an annual plant from the family Scrophulariaceae, native to South Africa, with rapid growth. It is the source of numerous horticultural varieties, whose performance in terms of floriferousness and durability is constantly being improved. The Sunsatia series is one of these successful creations, offering continuous flowering from May to October on very dense, wider-than-tall, semi-trailing plants.
The 'Cherry On Ice' variety has symmetrical flowers with undulated petals, half of which are red veined with black at the base, while the other half is immaculate white. They are enhanced by a small golden yellow heart. Gathered at the end of sturdy, leafy stems, they adorn a graceful clump measuring 25 cm (10in) in height and 30 cm (12in) in diameter, with a wide, compact, slightly trailing habit. The foliage consists of small, deeply toothed, lanceolate leaves, of medium green colour. This well-branched plant is resistant to wind and rain. Its slightly fragrant flowering attracts pollinating insects. The nemesia is hardy down to approximately -3°C.
From the first days of spring, the vibrant colours of nemesias illuminate the flowerbeds of cities and villages. On terraces and in gardens these fresh plants, with their graceful, bushy and trailing habit, are perfectly suited for hanging baskets, balconies, any type of container, and even perennial borders, preferably in full sun. They are easy to grow in the garden and provide spectacular results when planted in containers. Use them also as borders in a mix of colours, or in combination with geraniums, lobelias, verbenas, petunias, etc.
Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before placing them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care
Plant your Sunsatia Cherry On Ice nemesias in a sunny location or possibly in partial shade. They require a light, fertile, and humus-rich soil and appreciate a fertiliser application. They do not tolerate high temperatures combined with significant humidity very well. You can plant your nemesias in a flowerbed or in pots. In pots, these plants need to be regularly watered. Planting should be done after the last frosts, in spring. In summer, during periods of high heat, don't hesitate to prune the plant severely (10-15 cm (4-6in) from the base) between two flowerings to encourage the formation of new flowering shoots.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
