Touch-me-not, Busy Lizzie
The young plants arrived in very good condition and are developing very satisfactorily, as they do every year. I should mention that I have a heated greenhouse.

Description
The Impatiens 'SunPatiens® Compact Purple' is a hybrid variety that has very valuable characteristics. It is an impatiens that tolerates full sun exposure perfectly and is resistant to diseases. Its rapid development allows it to offer a beautiful compact tuft composed of green and dense foliage, ideal for summer compositions in pots or borders. Its flowering is abundant and long (from June to at least September) and covers the entire plant in dazzling magenta flowers under the summer sun.
The SunPatiens® from the compact series are the result of hybridisation work that has developed resistant and floriferous plants from New Guinea Impatiens. Belonging to the Balsaminaceae family, they are perennials that are grown as annuals in our latitudes, as they will not withstand the first frost. However, they have many other advantages, awarded in 2006 in Italy (among others, best bedding plant): They are robust, vigorous, and require no maintenance. Their compact ball-shaped habit allows for a beautiful rounded effect without pruning, with a height of 60 cm (23.6 in) and a minimum spread of 30 cm (11.8 in). Their numerous leaves are green and shiny, oval-shaped and pointed. From the end of spring, multiple flowers appear and renew themselves until autumn. They measure from 4 to 5 cm (2 in) in diameter and consist of five heart-shaped petals, widely spread. Their magenta colour is very bright and sparkling. It coordinates with many other colours to compose lively and joyful combinations. It is also a plant with original characteristics: studies have shown that they have the ability to absorb harmful gases and lower the ambient temperature. They are therefore considered depolluting or purifying plants.
In pots on the terrace or in containers near entrances, the 'SunPatiens® Compact Purple' offer you a floribundity that withstands any test without worries or maintenance. Preferring cool and rich soils, they will however tolerate full sun exposure and also accept a semi-shaded situation. In groups, they quickly form colourful and imposing flowerbeds. In isolation, they will enhance the slightly mild summers.
Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini pots are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them indoors (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care
The SunPatiens® Compact Purple Impatiens is easy to grow, in borders or containers. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and in a moist, well-drained soil, rich in humus. Very floriferous and fast-growing, it is hungry for nutrients. Feed it with liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season.
Plant it in the ground in spring, from March to May, after the last frost (as it will not tolerate frost). To speed up its growth, pre-cultivate it in a pot in a warm and bright location. Watering should be regular but not excessive. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to maintain a beautiful appearance and prolong flowering.
Remember to protect it from slugs that enjoy feeding on its young leaves.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
