Description

Fuchsia Sundancer is a vigorous and highly floriferous variety with a semi-trailing habit. It is also characterised by a remarkable resistance to sun and heat. Its dark pink and violet bicoloured bells continuously bloom from June to November on graceful and bushy foliage. It is not very hardy, but is easy to cultivate. This fuchsia creates a sensation on a patio or balcony.

Fuchsia Sundancer is a horticultural hybrid derived, among others, from F. magellanica, from which it inherited its vigour. It is a perennial shrub plant belonging to the Onagraceae family. The well-branched plant can easily reach 1m (3ft) in height with a spread of 80cm (32in) in just a few weeks. When grown in a very large pot, it can even reach a height of 2m (7ft) and occupy a spread of 1.5m (5ft). Its oval and elliptical leaves are shiny and dark green, providing a beautiful backdrop for the flowers. The flowers are numerous, very light, and generously bloom throughout summer. Shaped like 4cm (2in) long bells, they hang at the end of the stems, swaying in the wind. They consist of a long fleshy calyx with four pointed sepals of a deep pink-red, in which a small violet corolla is embedded. Long red stamens emerge from it. The plant perishes below -5°C (23°F). It should be overwintered frost-free in a bright but unheated room.

Fuchsia Sundancer brings something very new to the range of fuchsias intended for patio decoration. Unlike most varieties, it thrives very well in full sun and withstands heat if it benefits from slightly moist soil. Its strong personality is enough on its own, but it will be enhanced by foliage plants such as heucheras. In mild climates, it works well in a sheltered spot, providing a graceful backdrop for blue lobelias, catmints or agastaches, for example. Pair it with a white or pink ground-cover rose, or with a red gaura. This shrub plant also serves as a base for semi-shade compositions.

Note: please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant in rich, moist and well-drained substrate, in full sun or partial shade. Water regularly, as they are sensitive to drought. Do not water to excess. When grown in pots, do not leave water in the saucer, as this would cause the roots to rot and the leaves to fall. Feed with a liquid fertiliser for fuchsias every 15 days during the growth period. Regularly remove faded flowers and dry leaves. Prune back in autumn after flowering. Fuchsias can also be grown indoors, where they are perennial and evergreen.
