Description

The Begonia (x) hybrida 'Viking Trailing Pink' is distinguished by its vigor, trailing habit, and generous flowering in a bright pink colour. These qualities make it an excellent plant for hanging baskets or large pots. This variety offers numerous brightly coloured flowers for a very long period, enhanced by its vibrant and shiny green foliage. And this regardless of the weather, in partial shade or even in full sun.

The Begonia 'Viking Trailing Pink' is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the begonia family. It is the result of successive hybridizations of several species originating from Brazil. This variety is part of a series of very recent hybrids selected in the USA for their vigorous growth and remarkable, if not unique, colours. 'Viking Trailing Pink' has long fleshy stems covered with thick heart-shaped leaves of a beautiful vibrant green colour, about 5 cm (2in) long. This plant will quickly reach a height of 40 cm (16in) with a diameter of 65 cm (26in). Appearing in May-June and lasting until the first frost, its flowers are asymmetrical and cup-shaped. They face upwards and are composed of rounded petals arranged around a small yellow center, gathered in axillary clusters.

This Begonia Viking Trailing Pink tolerates full sun well, but it can also be placed in partial shade, especially in regions where the summer sun is scorching. It can be used in hanging baskets, troughs, balcony planters, or large flowering pots. The Viking series begonias also make beautiful mixed borders. They pair well with light foliage and flower plants such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, as well as petunias. For a more exotic look, they can be combined with dwarf cannas or Hedychiums to create a colorful border.

Note: Please be advised that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered area (conservatory, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The 'Viking Trailing Pink' Begonia blooms from May-June until the first frost. It should be planted in a well-drained, fertile, humus-rich, and light soil, moist but not waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade. Water moderately (it cannot tolerate excess water!) and provide frequent fertilization for abundant flowering. During the growing season, it is helpful to provide flowering plant fertilizer every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. Begonias can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. They are frost-sensitive and cannot tolerate freezing temperatures. For this reason, they are often cultivated in containers that can be easily brought indoors to greenhouses or heated conservatories at the first signs of frost.
