Description

The Begonia (x) hybrida 'Viking Bronze Red' is a recent and vigorous annual begonia, perfectly suited for use in flowerbeds or large pots. This variety, with its upright and bushy growth, offers beautiful flowers in a very vibrant red-pink colour, which are beautifully highlighted by bronze foliage, regardless of the weather, in partial shade or even in full sun.

The Begonia 'Viking Bronze Red' is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the begonia family. It is the result of several hybridizations of species native to Brazil. This variety is part of a series of very recent hybrids selected in the USA for their upright, vigorous and bushy habit, as well as for their brilliant and remarkable colouration. 'Viking Bronze Red' has stout and fleshy stems, covered with thick, heart-shaped leaves of a beautiful bronze-green colour, very glossy, about 5 cm (2in) long. This plant will quickly reach a height of 55 cm (22in) with a diameter of 60 to 65 cm (24 to 26in). Appearing in May-June and lasting until the first frost, its flowers are asymmetrical, cup-shaped, facing upward and composed of rounded red petals arranged around a small yellow center, grouped in axillary clusters.

This begonia with bronze foliage tolerates full sun, but can also be placed in partial shade, especially in regions where the summer sun is scorching. It can be used in flowerbeds, in vases, on balconies, or in large flowering pots. The Viking series begonias also create very beautiful flowerbeds when mixed with different varieties. They go well with plants with light foliage and flowers, such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, as well as petunias. For a more exotic look, they can be combined with dwarf cannas or hedychiums to create a colourful flowerbed.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them in sheltered locations (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The F1 'Viking Bronze Red' Begonia flowers from May-June until the first frost. It is placed in well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and light soil, moist but not waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade. Moderate watering is required (it cannot tolerate excess water!) and frequent fertilization for intense flowering. During the growing season, it is useful to provide fertilizer for flowering plants every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. Begonia can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It is frost-sensitive, therefore it cannot tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can be easily brought indoors in greenhouses or under a heated veranda at the first signs of cold weather.
