Description

Begonia semperflorens 'Maxima Rose Bicolor' stands out for the softness of its pastel shades. It is a new annual begonia from the 'Olympia' series. Its tender pink flowers bordered with cherry pink evoke the fresh blossom of apple trees. They continue to bloom until the first frosts. Its pretty corollas are arranged around a small yellow heart. The flowers are single or double, and grouped in clusters on round and shiny bright green foliage. It forms a bushy and compact plant whose vigorous vegetation withstands bad weather. This beautiful variety prefers full shade or partial shade.

Begonia 'Maxima Rose Bicolor' is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the Begoniaceae family. It comes from B. semperflorens, a hybrid between two species native to Brazil. This variety is part of a series of recent hybrids selected for their compact, vigorous and bushy habit, and their floribundity. It has stout and fleshy stems, covered with shiny, tough, rounded leaves of a beautiful fresh green colour, about 5cm (2in) long. This highly branched plant will quickly reach 20cm (8in) in all directions. Appearing in May-June and lasting until the first frost, its abundant flowers are asymmetrical, cup-shaped, and composed of rounded petals in 2 shades of pink. They are arranged around a small yellow heart and grouped in axillary clusters. Begonias are monoecious and bear flowers with exclusively male attributes (single flowers) and other female ones (double flowers). They are grouped in numerous terminal clusters.

This begonia is ideal for brightening up shady areas, but it can also be placed in partial shade. It can be used in flower beds, in troughs, on balconies, or in large flowering pots. It forms a beautiful ground cover, mixed with different varieties. It combines well with plants with light foliage and flowers, such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, and petunias. In a more exotic spirit, a colourful flower bed can be created by combining white Begonia Super Olympia with cannas or hedychiums. There are also hardy begonias available, such as Begonia grandis.

Please note, our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

It blooms from May until the first frosts. Plant in well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and light soil that is moist but not waterlogged. Place in full sun or partial shade. Water moderately (it does not tolerate excessive water) and provide frequent fertilisation for intense flowering. During the growing season, it is useful to provide fertiliser for flowering plants every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. Begonia semperflorens can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It is frost-sensitive, so it does not tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can easily be brought indoors in greenhouses or under a heated veranda at the first frost.
