Barely planted, these vervains bloom regularly. The white flowers are like snowy lace on the deep green foliage. They thrive in pots as well as in flower beds.

Description

Verbena 'Virgo White' develops long stems adorned with dark green foliage and clusters of small sparkling white star-shaped flowers, bringing a fine and infinitely delicate texture to all your compositions. It cascades from hanging baskets, and lightens up potted plants and all perennials in rockeries or flower beds. This frost-tender perennial is most often grown as an annual due to its rapid growth and long flowering period. It is a generous, disease-resistant, floriferous, and undemanding plant, but it requires full sun.

'Virgo White' belongs to the Verbenaceae family. It is a recent horticultural hybrid whose ancestors inhabited the warm regions of South America. Its stems are adorned with fine, slightly hairy foliage of a very dark green colour. In mild climates it will remain evergreen when planted in the ground. This plant forms a compact and trailing tuft, reaching about 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) in height and spreading about 50cm (20in). From early summer until the first frost, it produces a mass of upright stems that gracefully fall, lengthening at the same time as the umbels of tiny pure white flowers bloom. This perennial plant succumbs to frost and is grown as an annual in our climates.

Garden verbenas are truly easy plants to grow, suffering more from excess water and nutrients than from occasional neglect. They overflow from hanging baskets, and slip between other upright plants in pots or planters, concealing their base without suffering from their presence. They are also beautiful in rockeries and on banks, quickly filling in the spaces left by damage caused by a harsh winter. Create a beautiful hanging basket by planting it with an orange, red, or bright pink geranium (in the centre), black petunias, and blue lobelias.

Our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in shelters (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny location. They need light and humus-rich soil, and appreciate a moderate supply of fertiliser and water. They tolerate rather dry soil quite well. You can plant your verbenas in pots, hanging baskets, or flower boxes. In pots, they should be regularly watered, without excess, allowing the surface to dry between two waterings.

They are fragile perennials that are usually grown as annuals. You can bring them indoors at the first sign of frost to extend their flowering period during autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, by mulching well in winter and protecting the stump from moisture with plastic.

Plan for light pruning in March.

Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage the plant to branch out and produce new blooms.
