Description

This Verbena 'Vepita Dark Red' is part of a new generation of selected hybrid verbenas known for their naturally compact, bushy and slightly trailing habit, as well as their vibrant colours. It offers intensely red flowers, perfectly complemented by its lush green foliage. Vigorous and heat-resistant, and requiring little water, this beautiful plant blooms from summer to autumn, making it one of the best choices for patio and balcony decoration. It also looks lovely in sunny flower beds and rock gardens.

Verbena Vepita Dark Red belongs to the verbena family and is a horticultural hybrid whose ancestors originated from warm regions of South America. Within a few months, this plant forms a compact, rounded and slightly trailing clump, reaching a height of 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12in) and spreading about 35 to 45 cm (14 to 18in). It continuously produces flexible, upright stems that bear dense, round clusters of small, striking red flowers with a small white centre, reminiscent of phlox flowers. The faded flowers self-clean, reducing the plant's maintenance to a minimum. The foliage of this variety is a vibrant green, with larger leaflets compared to traditional varieties. Although this perennial plant cannot withstand frost, it is cultivated as an annual in our climate due to its rapid growth.

Garden verbenas are extremely easy to grow plants, being more susceptible to overwatering and overfeeding than temporary neglect. They overflow from hanging baskets, intermingle with other upright plants in flower pots and containers, effortlessly concealing their bases. They also look stunning in rock gardens, quickly filling in the gaps left by winter damage. Create a beautiful, colourful hanging display by combining Vepita Dark Red verbena with double sky blue petunia, purple-leaved morning glory, and a white lobelia.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame, etc.) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant your Verbena Vepita Dark Red in a sunny position. They require a light and humus-rich soil and appreciate a moderate supply of fertiliser and water. They tolerate rather dry soil quite well. You can plant your verbenas in pots, hanging baskets, or flower boxes. In pots, they should be regularly watered, without excess, allowing the surface to dry between waterings. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually delicate perennials: by bringing them indoors at the first frost, you can prolong their flowering during autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, by mulching well in winter and protecting the stump from moisture with plastic. Prune lightly in March.
