Description

Perennial in its native lands, Salvia farinacea 'Sallyfun Sky Blue' is a brand new variety of mealycup sage, grown as an annual in most of our regions except in the southern zone. This variety, with a compact and upright habit, offers from summer to autumn superb spikes of light blue-violet flowers, grouped on stems that rise above dark green foliage, in a particularly refined colour combination. It is suitable for flower beds, borders, flower beds, but also for containers. It is also a very beautiful cut flower.

Salvia farinacea is a perennial plant native to Texas and Mexico, from the Lamiaceae family. Its low hardiness and rapid growth make it an excellent annual in most climates. The cultivar 'Sallyfun Sky Blue', still little known, has an elegant habit, both branching and bushy, in clumps of 45 cm (18in) in all directions. It forms displays of sturdy stems, covered with dark green foliage, with slightly toothed aromatic lanceolate leaves, covered on the underside with a whitish down. From June to October, upright and dense spikes appear, covered with small white hairs and adorned with blue-mauve petals, speckled with white. The mealycup sages get their name from their stems covered with a light bloom.

The 'Sallyfun Sky Blue' mealycup sage will be perfect in a flower bed, for example, associated with roses, marigolds, a sowing of borage or rudbeckias. It will enhance large-flowered peonies, highlighting their romantic side. It can also be associated with grasses, gauras, and emerge from the silvery foliage of artemisias. This plant also forms pretty borders, along paths, it can be planted among the snow-in-summer (Cerastium tomentosum) which will carpet its base in a soft harmony of muted tones. Its very neat habit allows it to fill pretty flowering pots, in the company of pink calibrachoas or bacopas. Its spikes, reminiscent of lavender, hold up well in a vase.

With over 900 species of annuals, perennials, and soft-wooded shrubs, distributed everywhere around the globe, except for very cold regions and the tropical forest, the Salvia genus is the richest in the Lamiaceae family.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively removed.

Planting and care

Mealy sages thrive in fertile, moist, well-drained, and well-tilled soils, in full sun or partial shade. They are not very hardy and should be planted in the garden or in pots once the risk of frost has passed. However, they are heat-tolerant plants that thrive in soil kept consistently moist.
