Received very quickly, lovely bulbs. Now I just have to wait a year or two for the expected outcome.

More information

A small bulbous plant that stands out for its very long summer flowering of 6-petaled red stars. It is easy to grow in the sun in acidic and well-drained soil, but a bit tender. Rhodohypoxis is a little marvel for flowering pots, sunny rockeries and borders in milder climates and it multiplies easily. Hardiness: approximately -10 °C when dry.

Description

Rhodohypoxis baurii 'Red King' is a beautiful variety of Rhodoxis hybrid with bright red flowers originating from a small South African bulbous plant often used in flower pots from spring to the end of summer. Plant the bulbs in groups of 5 or 10, in a sunny, well-drained spot where they easily and quickly multiply. The Rhodohypoxis also thrives in rockeries and sunny borders, in coastal gardens protected from heavy frosts.

Rhodohypoxis belong to the Hypoxidaceae family. They are herbaceous perennials with a storage organ more similar to a thickened rhizome than a true bulb. There are 6 species, all originating from South Africa, and their growth cycle depends on the local climate: the plants grow and flower during the hot and rainy season, but go dormant during the cold and dry season. This explains their low hardiness in regions which are cold and humid in winter. Rhodohypoxis are loved for their long and generous flowering of pink, white or red star-shaped flowers that truly light up gardens, terraces or balconies.

Rhodohypoxis 'Red King' forms a small clump of slender, short, downy, veined, medium green leaves, reaching 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) high when flowering. The clump spreads quite rapidly in width thanks to its bulbous rhizomes. The foliage emerges from June to October and bears numerous flower stalks. The flowers with 6 unequal, 2-3 cm (1in) wide petals, do not have visible stamens and appear to be heartless. In reality, the stamens and pistil are hidden inside the tube formed by the fused petals at the base. The flowers are solitary or paired on the flower stalks. The plant goes dormant a few weeks after flowering, and its rhizomes need to be kept dry during this period.

Rhodohypoxis are relatively frost-sensitive so are normally grown in pots in regions where winters are harsh and humid. Plant them in March, in small groups of 5 to 10, in acidic, well-drained soil, in a sunny or semi-shaded position, with other small bulbs (grape hyacinthsIpheionspring crocussnowdrops, freesias...). In pots, a mix of ericaceous compost, garden soil, and vermiculite is necessary, repotting every year. It is also a good idea to feed two to three times a year. Maintenance consists of removing faded flowers, dividing to keep a minimum of three bulbs per pot, and stopping watering when the leaves wither. Then, over winter in a dark and cool room with monthly watering. Rhodohypoxis can create beautiful borders, in rockeries, in gardens that are not exposed to frost.

Planting and care

Plant your rhodohypoxis 3 to 5 cm deep, 8 to 10 cm apart. They look beautiful in pretty pots, planted in groups of 5 or 10. During the growing season, frequent watering is necessary. These plants prefer slightly acidic soils, rich in humus. Flowering begins in the first year of planting. They are sensitive to cold winters with stagnant humidity. In this case, the bulbs will need to be brought indoors before the frost, where they will spend the winter dry and protected from the cold, preferably in dry compost.  Outdoors, they are hardy in dry soil.
