Eucomis pallidiflora subsp. pole-evansii - Pineapple flower

Eucomis pole-evansii is the largest species in the genus. It produces impressive floral spikes that can reach over 1.5m (5ft) high. They carry at their tip a beautiful floral spike adorned with countless small white flowers, which are topped by a dense cluster of green bracts. The fruiting stage transforms this white spike into a large green candle. This bulbous perennial with an exotic appearance should be grown in rich and deep soil that remains moist but well-drained in summer. Grow it in a warm location.

Eucomis pallidiflora subsp. pole-evansii belongs to the Asparagaceae family, and is native to southern Africa. This bulbous plant grows spontaneously there among grasses, not far from streams and on the edge of forests, up to 2800m (9186ft) altitude. It develops a clump of large glossy leaves arranged in a crown, forming an ornamental and voluminous basal rosette, 80cm (32in) to 1m (3ft) wide. In July-August, an 80cm (32in) floral spike emerges, carrying at its tip a 60cm (24in) cylindrical cluster composed of small star-shaped flowers. They are white-cream with a small purple heart and yellow stamens that open from bottom to top. This pineapple-like inflorescence persists for several weeks. The flowering gives way to a fairly decorative green fruiting.

Plant Eucomis pole-evansii at the back of a well-draining bed, in the company of tall grasses (miscanthus, panicum, cortaderia), kniphofias, tall cannas, and dahlias. On its own, it creates magnificent borders near pathways. It will look elegant when combined with agapanthus, daylilies, ferns, tall foxgloves, or carpets of violets. Hardy down to -8°C (17.6°F), E. pole-evansii grows in full sun or partial shade in any well-drained, rich and moist soil. It is also easy to grow in a pot (which allows it to be stored during winter in cool climates), and its long-lasting flowers will make beautiful exotic bouquets.
