Description
Buddleja 'Octopus Magenta' is a butterfly bush with a unique compact habit and branched flower panicles in bright magenta pink. This unusual variety stands out not only for its long, generous summer flowering, but also for its floral structure reminiscent of an octopus's arms. Hardy, disease-resistant, drought-tolerant, it adapts everywhere, whether in the ground or in a pot, on a sunny terrace or balcony. Its flowers are irresistibly attractive to butterflies and other pollinators, while adding colour and dynamism to the garden.
Buddleja davidii ‘Octopus Magenta’ belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family. This ‘butterfly bush’, ‘David’s buddleia’ or ‘summer lilac’, also bears the trade designation Buddleja ‘1808mag’. It was bred around 2020 by Thompson & Morgan (United Kingdom), as part of a breeding programme aimed at producing compact, sterile, floriferous and original forms. This cultivar belongs to the ‘Octopus’ series, which is characterised by its branched flower panicles. They give each inflorescence a star-shaped structure that is very dense with flowers. Unlike the type species, which can become invasive in some environments, this sterile cultivar has modest dimensions, continuous flowering and better disease tolerance, particularly to powdery mildew.
Butterfly bush ‘Octopus Magenta’ is a semi-evergreen shrub, meaning it loses some or all of its foliage in winter depending on climatic conditions. Its growth is rapid: it reaches its mature size in two to three seasons. This butterfly bush forms a dense, branched bush with a naturally rounded habit, measuring 1.20m to 1.50m tall and 1.30m wide. Its foliage is composed of lanceolate, opposite, 6 to 12cm long, medium greyish-green leaves, slightly downy on the underside. The stems are quadrangular, as in all Buddleja davidii. The abundant flowers are grouped in conical, 20 to 30 cm long panicles, branched into several secondary axes. Each flower is tubular, an intense magenta pink. They are lightly scented, rich in nectar, and particularly attractive to pollinating insects such as butterflies, bees and bumblebees. Flowering extends from June to September, or even October in temperate climates. This cultivar produces few or no seeds, which reduces the risk of uncontrolled spread.
Buddleja davidii ‘Octopus Magenta’ makes a big impact in sunny borders and in large containers on the terrace. Mix it with floriferous perennials like Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant' and light grasses like Pennisetum, which act as airy counterpoints. Also pair it with pink echinaceas or woodland sages: a real feast for pollinators! It also fits into a low hedge with other buddleias for pots, Japanese spirea 'Anthony Waterer' and small deutzias like Deutzia gracilis, for example.

Buddleia davidii 'Octopus Magenta' is easy to grow, as it is an undemanding plant. It appreciates sunny spots, but also flowers in partial shade. Plant it in spring or early autumn, in ordinary soil, even limy, but well-worked and well-drained. Once well established, the plant will tolerate periods of moderate drought if the soil is deep. Buddleia davidii has no significant enemies. However, beware of caterpillars, vine weevils, bugs, and red spider mites that can invade it.

In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
