Miscanthus sinensis Silberfeder - Silvergrass
Miscanthus sinensis Silberfeder - Silvergrass
Miscanthus sinensis Silberfeder
Eulalia, Porcupine Grass, Chinese silver Grass, Maiden Grass, Zebra Grass, Susuki Grass
Planted in spring 2021. Well settled and well developed. Vigorous and graceful variety with a beautiful coppery flowering. I have several varieties of miscanthus in the garden and this one is quite flexible, so it tends to bend with the wind/rain, therefore I tie the clump to the fence.

Description
Miscanthus sinensis 'Silberfeder', also known as Eulalia or Chinese silver grass, is a spectacular ornamental grass, particularly floriferous even in cool climates. From August onwards, the white panicles rise among the foliage and then turn silvery to pale brownish-pink as autumn progresses. Its stature allows it to be used as a windbreak or privacy screen, even though the wind sometimes bends it. This giant perennial adapts to any ordinary, well-drained, and deep soil and can even tolerate moderate drought.
Eulalia 'Silberfeder' belongs to the poaceae family. It is a horticultural selection derived from Miscanthus sinensis, native to East Asia and Oceania. This grass with short rhizomes grows in a non-spreading clump, it is clump-forming. The habit is both erect and trailing, reaching a height of 2m (7ft), with a minimum spread of 70cm (28in). The leaves are wide and ribbon-like, very long, flexible, with a dark green color clearly marked by a light and silver stripe along the main vein. The flowering is particularly generous and stands out from afar. Long floral stems emerge from the foliage from August to October, in the form of very fine and finger-like silky spikes, 20cm (8in) long, tinged with white. When fading, they take on a more golden hue, tinged with pink. The plumes remain on the dry plant for a good part of the winter, retaining an appreciable decorative aspect during the "dull" season.
Designed for large mass plantings, these tall grasses and their strong presence bring beautiful structure and grace, if given space to express themselves. Contemplative gardeners place them among asters, behind chrysanthemums or repeat-flowering roses, and let them grow and expand. In a wild and tousled or modern and sleek atmosphere, they are admired as they play with the wind and the low autumn light, and bend under the showers. Miscanthus is well suited for planting as a hedge, creating a screen along an alley, to isolate a part of the garden, as a privacy screen or windbreak. These grasses add volume and create a natural transition between spaces. In urban areas, Miscanthus 'Silberfeder' blends well with its discreet colors, rounding off corners. It looks magnificent planted near water features and accompanies vernonias in well-drained soil. It can also be cultivated in large containers for terraces and balconies.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
