Description

Roscoea purpurea Spice Island is a unique variety with large intense mauve flowers carried on strong cinnamon brown stems, reaching a height of 60cm (24in).

Originally from the mountains of Asia, Roscoea purpurea is a very hardy plant, belonging to the ginger family.

Strong tubular cinnamon-brown stems emerge from its fleshy crown in spring, with grass-like leaves that are elongated and dark green with reddish undersides. In late summer, Roscoea 'Spice Island' bears dense spikes of intense mauve, tubular flowers which are flared at the end, resembling miniature orchids.

Roscoea purpurea 'Spice Island' is easy to grow and likes partial shade, rich humus soils and moist conditions. Cultivate it alongside rodgersias, cimicifugas, and hostas.
