Description
This is a collection of Oxalis triangularis, small bulbs known as red clover. It brings together three different varieties, the species Oxalis triangularis, its variant Oxalis triangularis subsp.papilionacea Atropurpurea, and Oxalis 'Fanny'. All three form small clumps of about twenty centimetres and have clover-like foliage and a very long flowering period from spring to autumn in pastel pink tones, but their foliage colour is different. Oxalis triangularis is not very hardy and non-invasive, it looks great in a hanging basket or a flower pot, away from the scorching sun. This trendy little plant fits perfectly into a contemporary interior.
This collection consists of:
- x 10 Oxalis triangularis - Purple Clover: foliage marbled with magenta pink and flowers in shades of pink and white. An award-winning variety at Courson.
- x 15 Oxalis triangularis ssp.papilionacea Atropurpurea: leaves in black chocolate colour, with a dark violet delta in the middle of each leaflet. Small pale pink flowers.
- x 15 Oxalis 'Fanny': foliage marbled with silver and remarkably generous pale pink flowers.
Bulbs labelled separately.
Perennial plants with bulbous or rhizomatous roots, sensitive to frost, these South American oxalis bloom abundantly in pots and hanging baskets, and even on the edge of undergrowth in regions where frosts are weak and rare. We recommend growing them in pots and bringing them indoors in winter. The bulbs or rhizomes should be lightly buried (about 3-4 cm deep in potting soil). The soil should remain slightly moist throughout the growing season, but almost dry in winter during the dormant period. Reduce watering at the end of October when the foliage dries out. In spring, take out your pots, place them in a bright location, but without direct sunlight. The ideal temperature for growing these oxalis should be around 18°C. Take your pots out from May to September, place them in a slightly shaded area, and water regularly.

Planting and care
We recommend growing Oxalis triangularis in a pot that can be brought indoors during winter, as it is a frost-sensitive plant. The soil should remain slightly moist throughout the growing season, but almost dry in winter. Winter is the dormant period for this oxalis. Reduce watering in late October. It is normal for the foliage to dry out in autumn. In winter, you can help the plant enter dormancy by placing it in a very dark room, such as a garage where temperatures range from 5 to 12°C. In spring, choose a bright location, without direct sunlight. The ideal temperature for growing this oxalis should be around 18°C, and it does not appreciate the dry atmospheres of our heated homes. Take your potted plants outside from May to September, place them in a slightly shaded area, and water regularly.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.

In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
