Description

This collection of crocosmia comprising the 'Columbus', 'Fire King', and 'Lucifer' varieties, is an exceptional choice for bringing the garden to life in summer. These tuberous plants, known for their brightly coloured trumpet-shaped flowers, have elegant deciduous foliage. Resistant to temperatures as low as -12°C in dry soil, requiring moist soil in summer, they thrive in the sun in slightly acidic to neutral soil, offering a flamboyant colour palette from summer to autumn. The tubers can also be planted in large pots.

The collection consists of:

10 x bulbs of Crocosmia or Montbretia 'Columbus': distinguished by its sunny yellow flowers on arching stems, reaching a height of 50-60 cm. It blooms from July to September.

15 x bulbs of Crocosmia or Montbretia 'Fire King': displays bright red and orange flowers. This variety reaches a height of about 60 cm and blooms abundantly in summer.

10 x bulbs of Crocosmia or Montbretia 'Lucifer': famous for its scarlet red flowers, it is the tallest of the three, with flowering stems reaching up to 1 metre. It blooms from July to September.

Thriving in a sunny border, the crocosmias in this collection should be planted in spring. They require well-aerated, well-drained, and rich soil. Work the soil well at the time of planting and, if necessary, incorporate sand. Each bulb should be covered with 10 to 12 cm of soil. While they prefer well-drained soil in winter, montbretias require plenty of water during their growing season and do not tolerate any drought in summer. In regions with harsh winters, it is advisable to lift the corms once the foliage has dried and store them in a frost-free location. Maintain a spacing of 15 cm between each corm for optimal development. With its stature, the 'Lucifer' is suitable for planting in the background, while the more compact  'Columbus' and 'Fire King' are perfect for borders or the foreground.

Half-corm, half-stump, Montbretia are symbols of summer. They are splendid when mixed with perennials (Buenos Aires Verbena, Hastate Verbena) or grasses (Stipa tenuifolia, Panicum virgatum Kulsenmoor...). When they thrive in the ground, they multiply over the years and become more beautiful each year. They are also excellent plants for cut flower bouquets. Their warm and bright flowers can last up to 2 weeks in a vase!

Planting and care

Plant your Crocosmia in full sun. They require well-aerated and well-drained soil. Work the soil well at the time of planting and, if necessary, incorporate some sand. The tubers, which like rich soil, should be covered with 10 to 12 cm of soil. Apply fertiliser at the time of planting and renew it every spring. While they prefer well-drained soil during winter, Crocosmias need plenty of water during their growing season and do not tolerate any drought in summer. In regions with harsh winters, it is advisable to dig up the corms once the foliage has dried and store them in a frost-free location. Another option is to cover the bed with a thick mulch or a protective cloth at the onset of winter and remove it in March.
