I received the Arum bulbs in perfect condition. I just regret Colissimo, who, true to its reputation, does not take into account the recommendations of its customers and systematically sends the packages to the depot. I will give you updates with photos of the blooming.

Description

Zantedeschia 'Flame', also known as Florist's Arum or Calla 'Flame', is truly flamboyant. Its spathes emerge golden yellow, then become covered with reddish-orange spots, gradually engulfing the inflorescence until it is completely saturated with dark red before finally turning green. A captivating spectacle, emerging from dark green foliage densely speckled with white, as beautiful as stained glass. This variety is slightly more susceptible to diseases and is best suited for experienced gardeners.

Zantedeschia 'Flame' is one of the many hybrids obtained through cross-breeding between two main species native to eastern and southern Africa, Zantedeschia rehmannii and Zantedeschia elliottiana. 'Flame' is an F1 Hybrid. It is a stemless species with large sagittate leaves, dark green and heavily speckled with transparent white. It reaches a medium size, measuring about 60cm (24in) in height. Like other hybrids, this plant requires specific growing conditions to flower. The flower, characteristic of arums, produces a highly ornamental spathe, almost 10cm (4in) in diameter, concealing a spadix that evolves from orange-yellow to deep red, perfectly matching the spathe. Its thick roots penetrate perpendicularly into the growing substrate, resembling fleshy and running rhizomes. In nature, these plants grow in marshes that usually dry up in summer, under year-round warm climates. The vegetation dries out, and the tuber enters a period of dormancy. This vegetative cycle must be strictly followed in cultivation. Florist's arums can live for many years if the cyclic resting period is properly observed.

Zantedeschia 'Flame' is particularly suitable for cultivation in large pots. It can also be planted in moist areas near a water source, in well-drained and fertile soil, with good sunlight. Cut flowers last particularly well in a vase, provided the water is changed daily and, for example, 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of bleach, 2 teaspoons of lemon (or lime) juice, and 1/2 litre of warm water are added.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Flame' Calla bulbs in March or April, at a depth of 12cm (5in), spaced 15cm (6in) apart, in a fresh substrate that is both sandy and humus-bearing, with a pH between 6 and 6.5. It prefers a sunny location or partial shade. When the shoots emerge from the ground, gradually increase watering. Soft rot of the rootstock* is a bacterial disease that causes the death of plants in both wet and cool conditions. This variety is more susceptible to it than others. The ideal temperature during the growing period is 18°C (64.4°F) during the day and 12 to 13°C (53.6 to 55.4°F) at night. When temperatures rise, it may be useful to mulch the soil to maintain freshness. Apply diluted fertilizer containing calcium and trace elements at planting and at least once a month. Growing in a large pot is possible, with careful and regular watering to keep the soil moist, and fertilizing every month during the growing season. Mulch them at the first signs of frost and protect them with bubble wrap, as they are sensitive to winter moisture and frost and are not very hardy in northern regions. In pots, store them during winter. They will form beautiful flowering clumps from June to August in a few years. You can cut back the foliage after the first frost.

*This disease is caused by Erwinia, Pseudomonas, and pectobacterium, naturally present in the soil, which attack fleshy storage organs such as rhizomes or tubercles, and transform the affected organs into liquid mush with a characteristic and unpleasant odor thanks to specific enzymes.
