Description

Lobelia erinus Monsoon is a small trailing herbaceous annual that is essential for summer hanging baskets and containers. Its numerous flowers range in colour from blue-violet to white-throated and resemble small butterflies, continuously blooming from June to September. They stand out against green foliage at the beginning of the season which turns bronze as autumn approaches. Its cushion-shaped habit adds volume to compositions.

Lobelia erinus is a must-have for container gardening. Its numerous thin and branching stems form a ball that fills hanging baskets all summer and fits in among taller summer plants. Its small alternate, obovate and slightly crinkle-edged leaves provide a backdrop for the multitude of flowers that bloom all summer. The approximately 1cm (0in) flowers are tubular at the base, then flare into three downward petals and two small upward ones, resembling insect antennae. They are regularly visited by pollinators.

Lobelia also thrives in pots, brightening up all corners of courtyards and terraces. You can use it to border the edge of a flower bed, especially if you have a small garden, preferably in a sunny (not scorching) spot or partial shade. However, be careful not to let it dry out, which it doesn't like. It prefers moist, but not waterlogged soil. A feed will give it even more vigour and if your climate is favourable, it will bloom until October.

The Monsoon variety forms a cascade of intense-coloured flowers. It pairs well with other summer companion plants such as Petunias, Verbenas, and Impatiens in romantic shades. It also creates contrast with bright Bidens, Lantanas, and Black-eyed Susans.

Attention, these seeds are reserved for highly experienced gardeners who are used to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Lobelia Monsoon is best sown under shelter from March, as the seeds need a temperature between 18 and 24°C (64.4 and 75.2°F) to germinate.

To distribute the fine seeds of the Lobelia more easily, mix them with a little sand. Just cover the seeds with a very thin layer of substrate kept slightly moist. Place them in the sun (essential) and if possible, wrap the container in transparent plastic film during germination. They will germinate between 14 and 21 days. As soon as they sprout, remove the protective film. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, you can separate them, put them in pots if the frost period is not over and keep them warm. Otherwise, arrange them in flower beds or pots. You can gradually acclimatise them if the nights are still cool by taking them out of their shelter during the day. Use a rich substrate that is not too waterlogged.

Be sure to water the Lobelias regularly, but not excessively.
