Beautiful bulb received, eager to plant it and see the colour! Thank you Jenny for preparing my package (multiple dahlias). Gardening is a passion that takes time but brings us a lot of satisfaction when the flowers and vegetables grow! The promise of flowers is exhilarating!

Description

Dahlia 'Prince Valiant' is a summer bulb from the category of Decorative Dahlias. This generous Dahlia offers an abundant flowering from July to the first frost.

Its large double ball flowers measure 18 cm (7in) in diameter, with petals white speckled and striated with carmine red. Its pretty flowers can be cut to make beautiful bouquets.

It is a large-sized Dahlia that can reach a height of 1.20 m (4ft). This non-hardy plant originates from Mexico. It was first grown for its edible roots, which did not meet any success. It was admired more for its flowers, which were picked to make charming fresh bouquets. Neglected, it is making a comeback in gardens and on the tables of our homes.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Prince Vaillant' appreciates sunny spots in your garden. Place it in a soil of ordinary type, rich in humus, sandy, fairly fertile, and well-drained. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10 cm (4in), spaced 40 cm (16in) apart. Planting should take place after the last frost, from May to June. Easy to cultivate, provide a nitrogen-rich fertiliser until the end of June, then a potassium-rich fertiliser from July to October. These supplements should be applied once a week and will be beneficial for extending the flowering period. After planting, water regularly at the base, preferably in the evening, avoiding wetting the foliage. Watering is imperative during hot periods. Regularly remove faded flowers. After flowering, bring the bulbs indoors to a dry and well-ventilated place, if possible in sand and protected from rodents. A cellar is an ideal location. Before bringing them indoors, leave some leaves in place so that the bulb can replenish its nutrient reserves, and wait for these leaves to turn yellow. You can replant them in spring.
