Description

The Dahlia 'Maxime' is a variety of decorative dahlia with red flowers bordered by a thin yellow line that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberculous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and ramified stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems, 90cm (35in) tall, are topped with flowers with wide, flat, rather incurved ligules, 12cm (5in) in diameter, red in color.

The Dahlia 'Maxime' grows in rich, clayey but healthy soil, worked deeply in warm and sunny conditions, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Maxime' is used in mixed flowerbeds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flowerbeds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Maxime' should be planted from mid-April to early May at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always provide stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Add compost or slow-release organic fertiliser during planting and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season—water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat for aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place that is not too humid. Transplant them in early May when there is no longer a risk of frost.
