Description

The Dahlia 'Le Baron' is a variety of decorative dahlia with magenta-pink flowers that bloom from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branched stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid and fleshy stems, 100cm (39in) tall, are topped with flowers with broad, flat, rather incurved ligules, 20cm (8in) in diameter, in magenta pink.

The Dahlia 'Le Baron' thrives in rich, clayey but healthy soil, deeply cultivated in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It struggles in poor, sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Le Baron' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

'Le Baron' should be planted from mid-April to early May at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always provide stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Add compost or slow-release organic fertiliser during planting and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season—water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat for aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place that is not too humid. Transplant them in early May when there is no longer a risk of frost.
