Condition and quantity of the bulb are satisfactory, but at this stage of the year, I have not yet been able to admire the result, hence my 4-star rating instead of 5 on the evaluation.

Description

The Dahlia 'Fiorentina' is a very floriferous variety of Decorative Dahlia. The round, semi-double flowers are bicolour with bright red petals mixed with white, and they bloom from July to October.

This perennial has fleshy tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow, and branching stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Strong, fleshy stems reach a height of 80cm (32in) and are topped with clusters of ligulate flowers measuring 8cm (3in) in diameter.

Dahlia 'Fiorentina' thrives in rich, clay, but well-drained and deeply worked soil,  in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It struggles in poor, sandy soils.

Dahlia 'Fiorentina' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

Dahlia 'Fiorentina' should be planted from mid-April to early May at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always stake the plants and tie the young stems loosely. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertilizer during planting and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place that is not too humid. Transplant in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
