Description
Dahlia 'Barcelona' is a variety of Decorative dahlia, dedicated to bouquets. The round, semi-double flowers have intense pink petals with pale pink tips, and they bloom from July to October.
This perennial has tuberculous roots that are swollen. These tubers are grouped together, producing upright, hollow and branched stems, carrying compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Strong, fleshy stems, 70cm (28in) in height, are topped with ligulate flowers in a lovely range of pinks, measuring 10cm (4in) in diameter.
Dahlia 'Barcelona' thrives in rich, clayey but healthy, well-worked soil in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.
Dahlia 'Barcelona' is used in mixed flowerbeds with other varieties or for making bouquets.
Tips: When planting, take into account the dimensions for the composition of your flowerbeds.

Dahlia 'Barcelona' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always use stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertilizer during planting, and liquid fertilizer once a month during growth. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in darkness in a cool, well-ventilated place that is not too damp. Repot in early May when the risk of frost has passed.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
