Description

The Dahlia 'Bishop of Canterbury' is a variety of violet anemone-flowered dahlia with a yellow crown at its centre, and it blooms from July to October.

This perennial has fleshy, swollen tuberous roots. Grouped in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and ramified stems, bearing compound, odd-pinnate leaves with round leaflets. Sturdy, fleshy stems 90cm (35in) in height are topped with flowers that have wide, flat, slightly incurved ligulate petals, measuring 8cm (3in) in diameter.

The Dahlia 'Bishop of Canterbury' thrives in rich, clayey but well-drained soil, deeply cultivated in warm and sunny locations, sheltered from prevailing winds. It struggles in poor and sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Bishop of Canterbury' is used in mixed flower beds or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Bishop of Canterbury' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always use stakes and tie the young shoots loosely. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place, that is not too humid. Transplant them in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
