Tubers in good condition and good recovery. Beautiful flowers, very white, with a long blooming period, but not as neatly arranged as shown in the photo!

More information

The most rustic of the Topmix series Dahlias. Small in size, well-bushy, it produces a multitude of small single flowers from summer to autumn, white with a golden heart, forming a bouquet of daisies. Alone or in combination with other varieties of Topmix Dahlias, it is perfect for animating borders, rockeries, and flowering pots until autumn. Its flowers are also very beautiful in bouquets.

Description

The  Dahlia 'Topmix White', like all the Dahlia in the Topmix series, is a small, bushy variety that produces many small single flowers in various colours. The 'White' selection, with its tiny white daisy-like flowers with golden yellow centres, has a countryside look that pairs well with all garden plants and all the colours in the Topmix range. Its flowers bloom from July to October on a densely leafy small bush, highlighted by beautiful dark green foliage. These little flowers are a highlight of sunny borders and are essential in cottage gardens, allowing for the creation of cheerful flower pots and charming bouquets.

Dahlias, part of the aster family, are initially from the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, the approximately 25,000 horticultural varieties created by humans have invaded gardens worldwide, much to our delight.

The 'Topmix White' variety is a Dahlia that falls between the "Mignon" and "decorative" categories. The plant will not exceed 40-45 cm in all directions; it has a bushy and very compact habit, not requiring staking. The flowering period for this variety is from July to October. What we call "flowers" are inflorescences called capitules, measuring about 4-5 cm (2in) in diameter. They resemble pretty simple corollas composed of a row of rounded-oval and almost flat outer ligules, pure white, arranged around the central disk composed of tiny ligules in a golden yellow colour. The highly branched stems are hollow, and the leaves are opposite and divided into 3 or 5 finely toothed lobes. The leaves and stems are a beautiful, reasonably deep green.

To promote continuous flowering and extend the blooming period, remove faded flowers. Even better, regularly cut them to create charming, colourful bouquets by combining various varieties.

'Topmix White' pairs well with all garden plants and the other dwarf Dahlias in the Topmix series. For example, combine it with the blooms of perennial salvias (Salvia nemorosa or pratensis) in mauve, violet, pink, or white shades. It will provide colourful accents throughout the growing season in containers, borders, and at the front of flower beds. Nepetas, small autumn asters, Helen's flowers, chamomiles, and summer daisies are good companions. Consider pairing it with Pennisetum villosum or setaceum Rubrum and Stipa pennata, which are lovely feathery grasses ideal for adding softness, lightness, and delicacy to the setting. This variety is suitable for container cultivation to easily adorn the terrace or balcony.

Dahlias are the stars of borders and cottage gardens, fearlessly accompanying the most beautiful flowers and the humble ones from the vegetable garden. They allow for the creation of beautiful flower pots or charming bouquets. This tuberous plant was initially cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption in Mexico. However, its poor taste qualities made it an ornamental plant. Since then, the fascination for their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Topmix' is easy to grow in all regions. For abundant flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubers in a sunny location after the last frost, rich, fresh, and well-drained soil is perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with blood, fish and bone. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, water once abundantly, then renew this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold; they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts will blacken the foliage, it's time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm (4in). Spread your bulbs in a box on a newspaper. Store in a frost-free, dry, cool, dark place like a garage or attic. In milder regions with only a few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a carpet of leaves or straw for protection.
