Description

Dahlia 'Crystal Star' is an explosion of colours in sunny flower beds. Its large flowers bloom all summer, displaying a candy pink hue splashed with touches of fuchsia, sometimes even leaning towards red. This generous and long flowering revitalizes the garden and allows for the creation of vibrant bouquets.

Belonging to the Asteraceae family, Dahlias are perennials with tubers that are susceptible to frost and need to be stored over winter in most of our regions. It appreciates sunny exposures and prefers rich soil for a long and colourful flowering. Its upright and rather bushy habit earns it a place among flower beds alongside other summer plants. Its hollow stems can reach up to 120cm (47in) in height and sometimes require staking. They bear opposite leaves composed of three to five finely dentate leaflets with a beautiful dense green colour. At the top, beautiful flowers proudly stand towards the sun. They consist of several rows of wide and slightly concave ligulate petals, arranged in an orderly manner. Very tightly packed at the centre, they are smaller when they bloom, folded and form a pretty cream-coloured heart. As they move outward, they enlarge, unfurl and lighten at the tips, thus resembling water lily flowers. The whole ensemble blossoms and often reaches a diameter of 14cm (6in) with changing and varied patterns. The pink base of the petals is indeed marked by multiple veins and small spots of a darker shade, which sometimes turn red. Unpredictable, these patterns bring life to the multicoloured ensembles and floral compositions with enthusiasm.

Thanks to its vibrant palette, 'Crystal Star' is a distinguished guest in diverse flower beds. It naturally blends with Echinaceas, Lupins, and other Dahlias. It happily mingles with summer plants of all colours, bringing its joyful touch and allowing for the creation of compositions with multiple tones.

Planting and care

The 'Crystal Star' Dahlia establishes itself as soon as the last frosts have passed. For a bountiful flowering, plant the tubers in full sun in a rich, fresh and well-drained soil. However, stagnant humidity would promote tuber rot. Feel free to amend the soil with compost and sand if needed. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, water once abundantly and then regularly renew this watering during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting. Once it is established, remember to provide support with a stake. If the situation is not protected and slightly windy (but not too much if possible) or if it cannot lean on dense and solid neighbors, it is indeed preferable to support it. You can also pinch it as it grows to allow it to branch out. Don't forget to remove faded flowers to allow new ones to develop. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts cause the foliage to turn black, which is the time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers, removing as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10cm (4in). Spread your bulbs in a box on newspaper. Store them in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a frost-free garage or an attic. In regions in the South, close to the coast, where there are only a few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.
