Description

This Brilliant Collection of Bouquet Dahlias brings together no less than 9 different varieties of dahlias, with varied shapes and sizes of flowers. They offer a magnificent palette of very warm tones, ranging from yellow to the brightest red, including various shades of orange, salmon and apricot. Blooming from July to October, these plants are the queens of flower beds and allow for the creation of sumptuous bouquets.

This collection consists of:

-1x Ball Dahlia 'Sylvia': spherical flowers, 8 cm (3in) in diameter, captivating, with a warm and gentle mandarin colour. They are made up of multiple petals arranged with millimetre precision, beautifully playing with the light.

-1x Ball Dahlia 'David Howard': 9-10 cm (4in) flowers of the 'decorative' type, coloured orange and with chocolate-coloured foliage. The plant, compact, does not exceed 70-80 cm (28-32in) in height. It blooms on purple stems.

1x Ball Dahlia 'Red Fox': 8 cm (3in) flowers, with petals or ligules forming a dense ball, precisely organized into compartments, of a bright, very uniform red, with a velvety appearance. The plant forms a leafy clump about 1 m (3ft) tall.

-1x Semi-Cactus Dahlia 'Omega': wide flowers of about 20 cm (8in), globular, salmon pink in colour tinged with yellow. Dentate and incurved petals or ligules only at their tips give them a pleasantly ruffled appearance, intermediate between the decorative dahlia and the cactus dahlia. Height: 1 m (3ft).

-1x Cactus Dahlia Ludwig Helfert: 15 cm (6in) flowers, globular, well double, with curled petals or ligules, of a magnificent light orange. This variety is particularly floriferous. Height: 1.10 m (4ft).

-1x Semi-Cactus Dahlia 'Witteman's Best' (synonym Superba): on stems 1.30 m (4ft) tall, flowers measuring 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) wide, filled with pointed petals, of a crimson red, darkened at the heart with more purplish nuances.

-1x Decorative Dahlia 'Babylon Bronze': flowers measuring up to 25 cm (10in) in diameter, well double, slightly flattened, and of an orange with bronze reflections, showing traces of coppery pink, pinkish brown or apricot depending on the nature of the soil and climate. Despite their size, they show excellent resistance due to their structure that allows rain to flow through. Height: 1 m (3ft), purple stems. This variety has won several awards.

-1x Decorative Dahlia 'Maxime': 12 cm (5in) flowers, very double, rounded, made up of multiple incurved ligules or petals, red in colour with a thin line of yellow to white. The floral stems, thin but sturdy, are purple in colour. Height: 90 cm (35in).

- 1x Giant Decorative Dahlia 'Barbarossa': 20 cm (8in) flowers, round and flat in shape, semi-double or sometimes double, offering a superb scarlet red colour, very homogeneous. Perched on long stems over one metre tall, they give a special relief to the background of flower beds. Height: 1.30 m (4ft), purple stems.

To promote re-flowering, make sure to cut off faded flowers, or even better, regularly make large colourful bouquets by combining them with other varieties. With their flamboyant colours, the dahlias that make up this collection blend perfectly with each other, not only in flower beds where they will create intensely coloured spots, but also in bouquets.

As the star plant of borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias confidently accompany the most beautiful flowers but are also appreciated alongside vegetable plants. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was first cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. However, its poor flavour relegated it to the rank of ornamental plant. Since then, interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

Plant your dahlias in the springtime in deeply worked soil, enriched for example with crushed bone or dehydrated blood. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of the planting, pour one litre of water. Water regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered under protection. In November, the first frosts will blacken the foliage, which is the time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tuber can replenish its reserves. When the foliage is dry, cut the stems 10 cm (4in) from the tuber. Spread your bulbs on newspaper in a box. Store away from frost in a dry, cool, and dark place.
