Description

The Dahlia 'Purple Flame' is a variety of decorative dahlia with deep pink waterlily-like flowers that bloom from July to October. The contrast of its intensely coloured flowers and dark bronze foliage make it an essential focal point to guide the visitor's eye in the garden.

This perennial has tuberous roots, swollen. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branched stems, carrying compound, odd-pinnate leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems, 1 metre (3 feet) in height, are topped with wide, flat, rather incurved, 12cm (5in) in diameter, dark pink flowers.

The Dahlia 'Purple Flame' grows in rich, clayey but healthy, deeply cultivated soil in a warm, sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It struggles in poor, sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Purple Flame' is used in mixed borders with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your borders.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Karma Purple Flame' is planted from mid-April to early May at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always install stakes and tie the young stems loosely. Add slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during growth—water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in darkness in a cool, well-ventilated place that is not too damp. Transplant them in early May when there is no longer a risk of frost.
