Description

The Dahlia 'Karma Maarten Zwaan' is a variety of decorative dahlia with ivory white waterlily-like flowers introduced in 2001 that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberculous roots. Clustered together, these tubers produce upright, hollow and branched stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid, fleshy 60 to 90cm (24 to 35in) tall flower stalks are topped with wide, flattened, rather incurved, 12cm (5in) in diameter white flowers.

The Dahlia 'Karma Maarten Zwaan' thrives in rich, clayey but well-drained soil, deeply worked in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soil.

The Dahlia 'Karma Maarten Zwaan' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for creating bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Karma Maarten Zwaan' should be planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always use stakes and tie the young stems loosely. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during growth. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the first frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) above the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place that is not too damp. Transplant them in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
