Description

The Dahlia 'Park Record' is a variety of dwarf cactus dahlia. The flowers with tapering petals and lacerated tips are orange, blooming from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce dark, upright, hollow and branched stems, carrying compound leaves with rounded odd-pinnate leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems 50cm (20in) tall are topped with ligulate flowers, tapering and lacerated at the tips, measuring 12cm (5in) in diameter.

The Dahlia 'Park Record' thrives in rich, clayey but well-drained soil, deeply worked in warm and sunny conditions, sheltered from prevailing winds. It languishes in poor, sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Park Record' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, take into account the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Park Record' should be planted from mid-April to early May at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and spaced 60cm (24in) apart. Always provide support stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season—water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to prune this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place that is not too humid. Transplant them in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
