Description
Paeonia × suffruticosa 'Shimadaijin', also known as Dao Da Chen (or Glamour), is a vigorous Japanese tree peony prized for its richly coloured spring flowering. It bears large semi-double to double flowers in a violet-purple hue that catches the light, opening to reveal a heart of yellow stamens. Over time, it will become one of the most beautiful shrubs in the garden.
This tree peony belongs to the Paeoniaceae family. It is one of the Japanese varieties, known as botan in Japan, derived from moutan peonies brought from China and then extensively selected in Japanese gardens. Paeonia × suffruticosa is the hybrid Paeonia jishanensis × Paeonia rockii.
'Shimadaijin' was raised by K. Ikeuchi in 1952, in Shimane Prefecture. The Japanese name 島大臣 is read as Shima Daijin and means "minister of the island". 'Dao Da Chen' is a Chinese reading of the same name, while 'Glamour' is a commercial variant. It is a deciduous shrub: the branches persist in winter, but the leaves fall in autumn. The plant forms an upright, vigorous bush, broadening with age. It reaches 1.50m in height, sometimes 1.80m in good conditions, with a spread of 1 to 1.50m. Its growth is slow at first, but this variety then grows vigorously. It flowers in the second half of the tree peony season, in April-May in mild climates, more likely in May in cooler regions. The flowers are large, around 18 to 20cm in diameter. They are semi-double to almost double, filled with violet-purple petals, more purplish-red or deep magenta depending on the light. The petals are broad, slightly crinkled, sometimes recurved inwards, giving the flower a rose-like appearance. The reddish-purple centre displays a cluster of yellow stamens. The scent is light, but noticeable in mild weather. The foliage consists of large green leaves, divided into lobes, sometimes tinged with purple on the young shoots. The fruits contain large black seeds that do not faithfully reproduce the cultivar.
Give this very "glamorous" tree peony a prime location and leave enough space around it. Its colour will be enhanced against white flowers and grey or purple foliage. It can be planted in front of a large border of Japanese rose 'Blanc Double de Coubert', Spiraea betulifolia 'Tor', Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo' and Cotinus coggygria 'Lilla', for example.

Planting and care
Plant tree peony 'Glamour' in partial shade, or full sun in northern regions. It needs six hours of sunlight per day to achieve beautiful flowering. Continental climates with marked winters and springs and hot summers favour particularly abundant flowering. Morning sun is appreciated, especially in Mediterranean areas, and scorching sun should be avoided. Plant it in fertile, deep soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or even slightly chalky, moist but well-drained. Once well established in deep soil, tree peonies need no watering in summer, particularly the varieties that flower early in spring. Its cold resistance is excellent, but the flower buds can be damaged by strong, dry, or cold winds.
Easy-going, tree peonies require little care but deserve careful planting. When planting, dig a large hole 40 to 50cm deep and at least as wide. Fill it with a mixture of garden soil, leaf mould, and river sand or gravel if your soil is very heavy and compact. Add crushed horn, bone meal, and dried blood to the bottom of the planting hole. Tree peonies dislike competition from the roots of other plants; allow a spacing of 1m from its neighbours. The graft must be buried about twenty centimetres deep so that the plant gradually becomes independent from its rootstock. Watering should be abundant but spaced 8 to 15 days apart for the first two years, from March to September. Peonies have a reputation for not liking to be transferred, so they should not be moved after planting. Avoid pruning unless the plant becomes bare at the base. If this happens, prune at the level of the basal shoots. Provide a stake to support the flower stems and cut off faded flowers.
'Glamour' can be grown for several years in a very large pot, provided it is given a deep container with several drainage holes. Choose a tub at least 50cm in diameter, with a depth of 40 to 45cm; a volume of 60 to 80 litres is suitable. Prepare a consistent mixture, composed of about 40% slightly clayey topsoil, 40% rich potting compost, and 20% fine pozzolana, pumice, or fine gravel. Place 3 to 5cm of coarse pozzolana at the bottom of the pot. Position the peony in morning sun or soft light, as dark pots quickly heat the roots. Water regularly during the growing season, without allowing water to stagnate in a saucer. Leave the pot outside over winter as the plant needs the cold to flower well again.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
