Description

Aster novae-angliae 'Herbstschnee' is a beautiful recent creation with pure white petals and a yellow centre. The flowering lasts until late October, taking over from your summer perennials. Among autumn Asters, this is one of the most resistant to powdery mildew and is very vigorous. Its stems do not easily bend in the wind.

The family of Asteraceae, to which Asters belong, is mainly characterised by the shape of its flower heads, called capitulum. This variety is particularly hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -45°C (1°F). 'Herbstschnee' flowers abundantly, transforming into a veritable bouquet of daisies, provided you have ensured it does not suffer from intense drought during the summer. It does like sunny locations, but will prefer to have its base protected by a thick mulch.

The 'Herbstschnee' Aster (or Miracle Blanc) is perfect in borders for extending the flowering season in the garden into autumn, but you can also plant it in large pots to brighten up the surroundings of your house. In the ground, create a rustic feel by surrounding your asters with tall perennials and small bushes, plus some evergreen foliage plants which will provide greenery to accompany the asters until the end of their flowering period.

Planting and care

Plant Aster novae-angliae 'Herbstschnee' in autumn or spring in ordinary, rich and well-worked soil. It can withstand temperatures as low as -45 °C (1°F). It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, where it will have a slightly looser habit. It is important to avoid strong winds that could flatten the clumps. Unlike older varieties, 'Herbstschnee' does not require staking. Once established, it is best not to move it as it doesn't like change. In a border, maintain a minimum spacing of 50 cm (20in) around plants. This plant does not tolerate competition from other roots at all. Mulch the soil from June onwards and water during heatwaves. New England Asters are not susceptible to powdery mildew. Divide the clumps every three years to keep them flowering abundantly. Do not replant the divisions in the same spot, and provide them with a rich soil.
