Accustomed to ordering varieties that I can't find elsewhere, this particular variety is the second big disappointment from this last order. Pots 9/9 with a beautiful substrate sufficiently moist for transport, but I can't find the asters even though it's the flowering period, not even stems with faded flowers... a surprise in a year if they hold up until then.

Description
Aster lateriflorus 'Horizontalis' is a perennial with small white flowers with a purple heart, blooming in large numbers on stems with horizontal branching - a special feature for an aster. Ideal at the end of the season to brighten up the garden.
Aster lateriflorus 'Horizontalis' reaches a height of 60 cm (24in) and its dark green leaves are slender with smooth margins and pointed ends. Flowering takes place during the months of September to October, when the aster is studded with white flowers resembling small daisies, on ramified stems of a similar purple shade to the heart of the flowers. A remarkable plant, Aster lateriflorus 'Horizontalis' will bring some fresh air to the garden before winter. Its low bushy habit makes it a perfect candidate for border plantings, alongside plants with colorful foliage in autumn, such as grasses. Also consider container cultivation, so you can enjoy the bright flowering up close to the house.
Easy to grow, hardy and fairly resistant to diseases, this variety of aster will be satisfied with a sunny site in well-aerated, fresh and well-drained soil.
The genus Aster is extremely diverse and comes in a wide range of colours, and varieties of all sizes. Depending on the cultivars, it is even possible to spread out their flowering from spring to the end of autumn; amateur gardeners who love these pretty daisies with their rustic look can enjoy them for a large part of the year.

Planting and care
Plant Aster lateriflorus 'Horizontalis' in autumn or spring in a regular, rich, and well-worked soil. To retain moisture at the base, mulch your flowerbed from June onwards and water in case of heatwaves. It appreciates a sunny exposure but tolerates partial shade, where it will have a slightly looser habit. Once established, avoid moving as it doesn't like change. In a flowerbed, maintain a spacing of at least 50 cm (20in) between plants. Aster lateriforus are quite resistant to diseases, but if you notice powdery mildew appearing on the leaves, remove them immediately. Divide the clumps every three years to keep them floriferous. Do not replant the divisions in the same place, and give them a rich soil.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
