Description

Aster cordifolius 'Blue Heaven' is covered with small lavender-blue flowers with yellow to purple anthers from September until frost. Asters are essential in autumn gardens.

Nicknamed "Eye of Christ," this hardy perennial forms a well-branched bushy clump with a height of 90 cm (35in). It develops deciduous, simple, lanceolate, toothed, green leaves, 12cm (5in) long. The tiny lavender-blue flowers with yellow to purple anthers are grouped in bouquets. They grow on brown-tipped, branched, smooth stems. The flowers make a beautiful floral arrangement in a vase.

Easy to grow, Aster cordifolius 'Blue Heaven' appreciates a consistent, calcareous, well-drained, not too poor soil that remains moist in summer. It prefers a sunny position. This variety tolerates light shade well. Prune the stems after flowering and divide if necessary in early spring.

Aster cordifolius 'Blue Heaven' is used in flower beds or to adorn a fence, combined with perennial geraniums or grasses. It is also ideal for making bouquets.

Planting and care

Aster cordifolius 'Blue Heaven' should be planted in spring or autumn with a spacing of 35cm (14in) in good garden soil. Stake and apply flower fertiliser in spring. To control the height, you can pinch out the shoots in April/May. Water well in summer. Cut back to ground level after the first frosts. Divide every 3/5 years in spring to prevent it from thinning out. Beware of snails and slugs as well as fungal diseases.
