Description

Viola wittrockiana F1 Frizzle Yellow are unique pansies with frilly corollas. They boast a bright yellow colour, enhanced by a black central spot. The plants are compact and well-branched, flowering from the end of winter and throughout spring, with a generous re-blooming in autumn. These hardy biennials thrive in cool climates, in humus-rich soil. They are happy in full sun or partial shade.

Garden pansies, sometimes called giant Swiss pansies, are hybrids that are grouped under Viola x wittrockiana. They belong to the Violaceae family and are most often grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically short-lived perennials. This variety is a beautiful improvement. It produces bushy plants that quickly form compact clumps with a rounded habit, measuring about 15cm (6in) in all directions. They flower from the end of winter to the end of spring, and again from the end of summer to the brink of winter. Only frost and extreme heat will stop their prolific flowering. Frizzle Yellow pansies bear wide-open large flowers, 6 to 7cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. The petals are strongly undulated along the edges, resembling crumpled silk. They boast a bright yellow colour, marked with black macules at the base of the petals, around a tiny bright yellow and white heart. The medium green leaves are elliptical and broadly serrated.

Pansies are wonderful in the garden, but they also work beautifully in a pot on a windowsill to be enjoyed up close. They look perfect alongside primroses, wallflowers, grape hyacinths, and daisies. They even go well with grasses like Japanese sedge for a contemporary effect. Combine them with heucheras and tulips. The blue-green of glaucous fescues also enhances their beauty.

Pansy petals are edible, and their colours will add a unique touch to salads and pastries. For this use, consider growing them just like you would grow your vegetables, in the most natural way possible.

Planting and care

Pansies thrive in humus-rich, neutral to acidic, moist and fertile soil. A quality horticultural compost will be very suitable. They appreciate a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. They need to be fed with a liquid plant food for containers once or twice a week during the growth period. Water regularly but without excess. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
