Description

The fascinating flowers of Viola wittrockiana 'Ultima Radiance Red' change colour depending on temperature and situation. Medium-sized, they are bicoloured in red and orange, somewhat flashy to almost fluorescent, and are further enhanced by a small white and golden heart - to the point that the gaze inevitably rests on these dazzling blooms. These biennial pansies are compact, vigorous, and floriferous in autumn and spring, easy to grow in humus-rich and moist soil, in all sites.

Garden pansies, sometimes called giant Swiss pansies, are actually hybrids grouped in the Viola x wittrockiana group. They belong to the viola family and are mostly grown as annuals or biennials, although they are theoretically perennials but short-lived. The 'Ultima Radiance F1 Red' variety produces branching plants that quickly form compact tufts, with a slightly spreading habit, 20 cm (7.9 in) high and 20 to 30 cm (11.8 in) wide. They bloom in spring and autumn. 'Radiance Red' pansies offer medium-sized flowers, 4 to 5 cm (1.6 - 2 in) in diameter, well open. Invariably red and orange, the bicoloured flowers display paler or darker shades of greater or lesser contrast depending on the temperature and/or exposure. All petals show a wide orange central zone, widely bordered in bright carmine to vermilion red. The base of the petals is adorned with a pretty bright yellow macule from which beautiful black 'moustaches' radiate. The medium green leaves are elliptical and broadly crenate.

If you love them in the garden you will greatly appreciate them in window boxes, to enjoy while keeping warm inside. Plant alongside primroses, Wallflowers, Grape Hyacinths, Daisies and even with grasses like Japanese Sedge for a graphic effect with a contemporary feel, or group together with Coral Bells and Tulips. The blue-green of glaucous fescue also enhances them well.

Pansy petals are edible and their colours will bring a touch of originality to your salads and pastries. For this purpose think of growing them as you would your vegetables - in the most natural way possible.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, or directly into flower beds.

Planting and care

Very floriferous and fast-growing, 'Radiance Red' pansies are hungry and like a sunny or partially shaded site, or even one that is shaded in the afternoon. They thrive in a humus-rich, neutral to acidic, moist and fertile soil. Feed them with a liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing period. Water regularly but not excessively. Regularly remove faded flowers to promote new blooms.
