Description

Babiana, also known as Baboon Root, resembles a mini-gladiolus. These bulbous plants reach a height of 30cm (12in) and produce 10 to 20 pleasantly fragrant flowers with a diameter of 2cm (1in). The leaves are slender like those of a gladiolus and very plicate.

Babianas flower towards the end of spring or the beginning of summer. The flowering period lasts for 3 to 5 weeks, making them particularly suitable for flower beds and rock gardens. They can also be grown in pots.

Planting and care

Plant Babianas in a sunny location in well-drained soil. In regions with a mild climate, they can remain outdoors, protected. Plant them at a depth of 10cm (4in), spaced 7 to 10cm (3 to 4in) apart. They are not frost-resistant and can be protected with a thick mulch or brought indoors. Even better, dig them up in autumn and store them in dry turf. Pot planting: Place 5 Babianas in a 10cm (4in) pot.
