Description

Agapanthus campanulatus var. albidus is a very pretty white form of the campanulate Agapanthus, the hardiest botanical species of all. This majestic perennial offers large round umbels in summer, loaded with white bell-shaped flowers, carried well above a deciduous foliage of a greyish green, quite narrow, gathered in a dense clump. This very graphic plant, suitable for planting in the ground in many regions, will bring a beautiful touch of exoticism to sunny flower beds.

Originally, like all Agapanthus, from South Africa, Agapanthus campanulatus is spontaneous in Natal. Agapanthus campanulatus var. albidus is a rare form of this plant with blue flowers that grows at low altitudes in wet meadows. It develops in spring, from a stump with fleshy rhizomes, forming a dense clump of linear, ribbon-like foliage, at least 50cm in diameter, expanding over time. Each leaf can reach 40cm in length and 1cm in width. Flowering takes place in summer, from June-July to September. Sturdy stems measuring 80cm to 1m in height carry large spherical umbels measuring 10cm in diameter, composed of about thirty small campanulate snow-white flowers carried by long peduncles. The foliage turns yellow and then disappears in autumn.

Agapanthus campanulatus var. albidus is sumptuous in the garden with its large inflorescences that stand out from a well-filled clump. The pure white colour of the flowers and their abundance will add an elegant touch to your flower beds, alongside the typical blue-flowered form. Very hardy, it can withstand temperatures around -12/-15°C without weakening, which is why it can be planted in the ground almost anywhere. In very cold regions, it should be given a protected and south-facing location, and a thick mulch should be placed at its base. Whether in flower beds, borders, large rockeries, pots or containers, Agapanthus is suitable for a wide range of uses. It is particularly well-suited to coastal climates.

Agapanthus umbellatus is a plant linked to fire ecology. In South Africa, it is often subjected to fires that destroy the vegetation of the Fynbos, and seems to flower more abundantly when it has experienced fire.

We deliver them with a 2/3 eye stump. Over time, they will form stronger and stronger clumps.

Planting and care

Plant Agapanthus campanulatus by covering them with at least 10cm of good soil so they can withstand the cold. It is essential to plant them in spring and mulch them in winter. For pot cultivation, use 5 plants for a 24cm pot and protect your pots in winter. They prefer a rich and moist, yet well-drained soil. Water them regularly during the growth period (twice a week). However, avoid watering them afterwards. They are sensitive to excessive moisture in winter.
