Description

This mix of Asian Ranunculus brings together different varieties of florist's ranunculus, with varied colours full of freshness and vivacity. In spring, it offers a profusion of round and double flowers, with crumpled petals like silk, in different shades of pink, orange, red, or even white, depending on the plants. These small perennials are ideal for creating colourful and rustic flower beds. Its flowers last 3 weeks in a vase. Not very hardy, it is grown in partial shade or in the sun, in cool, humus-rich soil.

Asian ranunculus, also known as garden ranunculus or Oriental ranunculus, is a herbaceous perennial plant with tubers native to the eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Crete), in the family of ranunculaceae, just like our Buttercup. The mixed Asian ranunculus and its spring flowering are often intended for cultivation under cover, in floristry, to speed up the production of its magnificent corollas. In May-June, each bulb offers up to 10 flowers in more or less double cups, more or less uniform, in a palette of very vivid colours. These flowers measure from 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, and they do not produce seeds.

Its deciduous foliage develops in a rosette. The basal leaves measure from 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) long. They are pale to dark green, divided into three deep lobes. At maturity, this Asian ranunculus can reach 35 cm (14in) in height. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F). Its root is very persistent, consisting of several small elongated tubers, grouped together in a vascular bundle, which are sometimes called "claws".

Asian ranunculus can be grown in flower beds, borders, rockeries, and even in pots on a terrace. It is a very ornamental plant that is also used in bouquets, for its excellent durability. It can be combined in floral arrangements with old roses that resemble them so much, or even modern roses with perfect shapes, harmonizing the colours. By digging up the tubers in autumn to store them before the frost, this plant can be grown like a gladiolus.

Planting and care

The Florists' Buttercup is planted in autumn, in mild climates or in pots, for an early flowering (April-May) or in spring, in cold climates, for a summer flowering. It thrives in partial shade as well as in full sun. Place it in a light soil, possibly enriched with coarse sand, humus and fresh water. This plant does not tolerate calcareous soils. In autumn, dig up the tubers and keep them in a dry and cool place to protect them from frost as they are not very hardy. Before planting them, we advise you to soak the bulbs for half a day. During planting, plant the tubers in an equal mixture of garden soil, leaf compost and coarse river sand. It flowers 120 days after planting. Planting density: 16 to 20 bulbs per square meter.
