The bush, very healthy and vigorous, arrived quickly and well protected in its packaging. This year, it did not produce any flowers. It will probably be for next year...

Description

The Viburnum x carlcephalum is a round-shaped bush with many highly fragrant, pinkish-white flowers. It is very cold-resistant, and easy to cultivate and maintain. It is a must-have for scented gardens!

The Viburnum carlcephalum has deciduous leaves that are 10cm (3.9in) long, ovate, opposite, dentate, dark green turning red in autumn. In May, the flowers develop in clusters of pinkish-white, 10-12cm (3.9 - 4.7in) in diameter at the end of the branches. They are 1cm (0.4 in) in diameter with a very strong fragrance and followed by small oval-shaped fruits that are red and then black, measuring 6mm (0.2in) which are attractive to birds.

This slow-growing bush can reach a width of 3m (9.8ft), and it thrives in all types of rich, acidic, moist, well-drained soils in sunny or partially shaded locations. Pruning involves removing dead wood and some old branches every 3 years, after flowering.

To enjoy the delicate scent of the carlcephalum bush, place it near a pathway or the house. In a flower bed pair it with Rhododendrons, Prunus, Japanese Kerrias or in a border, alongside daffodils, tulips or forget-me-nots.

Tips: To stimulate growth in the first years of cultivation, enrich the soil with potash fertilizer in spring.

Planting and care

The Viburnum x carlcephalum is best planted in autumn in cool, acidic, rich, and well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded position at a spacing of 80cm (31.5in) in all directions. The addition of compost is necessary at planting. Water generously and mulch the soil to retain moisture. Once the flowers have faded, prune out older, overcrowded, misshapen, or diseased branches. Beware of black bean aphids! Spray a solution of black soap (30g/l water) as soon as they appear.
